Caroline Smith Dean
Based in Birmingham, Alabama and specializing in Southern stories
A bit about Caroline…
Caroline Smith Dean is an attorney and writer who lives in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. She primarily enjoys writing about the South, drawing inspiration from the places and people around her.
Caroline graduated from the University of Alabama in 2020 with bachelors degrees in English and Spanish, as well as a minor in creative writing. After her undergraduate studies, Caroline spent a semester in Spain as a Fulbright Scholar, where she taught English in a Galician elementary school. During her time there, she wrote the blog Caroline’s Cocina, where she compared and contrasted Galician cuisine with cuisine from the American South.
Once back on US soil, Caroline attended law school at the University of Alabama School of Law. She graduated with her juris doctorate in 2023 and currently works as a commercial litigator, specializing in intellectual property. She took a hiatus from writing while she found her footing in the legal world, but now she is excited to dive back into the world of storytelling.
She enjoys spending time with her husband, Jackson; exploring the Birmingham culinary scene; watching movies (especially Jane Austen adaptations); and painting in watercolor and gouache. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
